Current popular advice for growing your business is, “You need a coach.” That’s true. But it also prompts many people from many backgrounds to hang up their coaching shingle, advertising for clients.
The term “coach” is broad and general so the key to hiring the right coach is knowing what you’re looking for and what TYPE of coach to hire. After all, you wouldn’t hire a tennis coach to improve your golf game, would you?
Every coach has her own niche – just like any business serves a particular niche – and within her niche, every coach has her own strengths and weaknesses. Let’s look at some of the most popular coaching niches in more detail.
Branding and Visibility Coaches
Branding is so much more than your logo and your business colors. Branding coaches will help you develop your personal brand – or your company image – and will help you gain the visibility (publicity) that you need to build brand recognition. Branding coaches have a firm understanding of how to convey your message to your audience and how to keep your business image positive; that’s what sets them apart from graphic designers or web designers.
Mindset Coaches
Mindset coaches focus on how you think and feel about your business and your life; and how to turn negative thinking into positive. Mindset coaches do not solely focus on business; if you’re unhappy with any aspect of your life, a mindset coach can help you figure out what’s holding you back from reaching for your dreams. Some mindset coaches are licensed therapists while others are certified in a specific area such as money mindset, or law of attraction.
Empowerment Coaches
These coaches empower their clients who struggle with lack of confidence and shyness. Again, they are not focused solely on business owners; absolutely anyone who wants to combat negative self-talk and increase their own self-esteem can hire an empowerment coach. Some confidence coaches are licensed life coaches or have other degrees.
Public Speaking Coaches
There’s much more to public speaking than reading PowerPoint slides. Public speaking coaches are skilled communicators who can analyze the effectiveness of your presentation; give hints about diction and enunciation, as well as give tips for making your presentation more engaging or entertaining. These speaking coaches can also help you combat your stage fright and some will help you find speaking gigs.
Copywriting Coaches
Writing is not a talent that comes easily to everyone. Whether you need some critiques for your blog posts or want to get input of how to outline your book, writing coaches are language experts who often specialize in a certain niche – book publishing, travel writing, food writing, etc. – who can help you convey your information in a more effective way to your audience.
Sometimes a title doesn’t say a whole lot
I call myself a Creative Business Coach, which encompasses all the areas above. It’s general, but I help entrepreneurs in many different ways, and it doesn’t pigeonhole me into any one category. This can be an asset or a detriment, because clients don’t always know how I can help them.
I also call myself a Book Mentor because I have a program specifically for authors who need support writing and publishing. It’s more niched, and if I were to niche it down even further, I would call myself a Book Writing and Publishing Coach for Women Entrepreneurs Who Want to Get Over Their Blocks and Get Their Message Out to the World and Generate Passive Income.
So a coach can go narrow or wide when it comes to a title. That’s why it’s always good to have a convo to find out specifically if a coach is right for you. You’ll know it when either you click or you don’t, so a title is only a starting point to finding one that’s right for you.
